¶ ELF
Elves are the long-lived children of the natural world, the mortal counterpart to the fae who are in tune with the natural world around them. Most elves understand and respect nature more than most mortal races. They can see the long-term intertwined relationship between mortal survival and nature conservation. Elves’ bodies sometimes change over time to take on some of the characteristics of their environment.
Passionate but flighty, elves are quick to anger, laughter, and love, but just as quick to move away from such feelings. Many are impulsive, but eternally patient, as their long life span allows them to take much longer to achieve and accomplish things than most races. They do not quickly address potential issues or threats because, as has been shown over and over again, time usually heals all. Once you have made an ally of an elf, you generally have an ally for life. They are loyal and they will assist their friends with most anything. Elves are also lovers of art and nature, which helped them acclimate with the other civilized areas after the upheaval. When not honing their skill with a bow, most can be found drinking, dancing, painting or enjoying nature. Although most elves will not eat meat on a regular basis, they will accept the food, although they won't consume it, if guests at a banquet. They are okay eating fish. This dietary restriction may not apply to all sub-races.

¶ Half Elf (+5 Authority)
- Any alignment
- Any biome
- Most tend to be born to a moon elf and a civilized human.
- Any human hair/eye/skin color.
- Any diet
- Pointed ears are common
- Typically stand between 140 to 189 cm in height.
- Lifespan is about 180 years, with maturity being 30, middle aged 60 and venerable is 125.
- No RP stat bonuses or negatives.
¶ Dark Elf (+3 Agility/+2 Authority)
- Usually evil aligned
- Prefer to live underground and in the dark
- Also called shadow elves
- Anti-social
- Natural hatred for most others, including other elves
- Dark grey, black or obsidian skin color
- White, yellow or silver hair color
- Bright red eyes, sometimes pale shades of other colors
- Smaller than other elves, standing between 137 to 167 cm tall.
- Non-meat diet, prefer fungus and plants

¶ Frost Elf (+3 Expertise/+2 Grit)
- Prefer cold climates
- Also called ice elves
- Natural inclination for cold magic
- Pale or light blue skin
- White or light blue hair
- Any eye color
- Typically tall, between 151 to 220 cm in height, and thin.
- Usually a non-meat diet
- +1 Dexterity/-1 Constitution

- Highly civilized
- Also called sun elves
- Natural inclination for learned magic
- Height runs between 146 to 220 cm.
- Slender build
- Silver, blonde or copper hair, although black is also found
- Green or gold eyes
- Non-meat diet.

¶ Moon Elf (+3 Agility/+2 Grit)
- Mostly nomadic
- Also called silver elves
- Pale skin, often with icy blue hue
- Black, blue or silver white hair
- Usually green eyes, sometimes blue eyes
- Between 143 to 186 cm in height.
- Most accepting of non-elves
- Natural inclination for social and commercial lifestyles
- Non-meat diet
- +1 Dexterity/-1 Constitution
¶ Sea Elf (+3 Expertise/+2 Agility)
- Secluded but mainly through necessity
- Also called aquatic elves
- Distrusting of land dwellers
- Prefer deep water habitats
- Communal in nature, rarely having individual homes among their clan
- Sea elves must live in or touching water and they must role play the inability to last too long outside of the water.
- Green or blue hued skin
- Green, blue, red, silver or black hair
- Turquoise, blue, green, black or white eyes
- Between 164 to 195 cm in height.

Shadar-Kai are a restricted race on Maelstrom. The rumored history of the Shadar-Kai place their origin to the failed attempt by the Raven Queen to ascend into divinity. It is believed the Shadar-Kai were the elves who agreed to participate in a ritual to pledge their souls and magic to their queen so she could attempt to reunify the elven pantheon. The ritual was corrupted by evil wizards who siphoned the queen and her followers into the Shadowfell, forever keeping the Shadar-Kai's souls bound to their queen.

Star elves are heavily restricted on Maelstrom because they are rare and have very limiting role play that may not appeal to all players. As such, the number of star elves active on the server at one time is limited to only a few and anyone who wishes to play a star elf must be familiar with the lore and role play restrictions. They must write a detailed backstory and submit an application with this backstory to the admin team BEFORE they begin play as a star elf. There are currently no available Star Elf slots. You must have played on the server for a full season before an application will be considered by the admin team. Once a slot opens up, the next applicant who has been approved will be notified.

- Generally sticks to a non-meat diet

¶ Wild Elf (+3 Grit/+2 Agility)
- Reclusive, preferring the wild and avoiding civilized areas
- Also called savage elves
- Dark skin tones (tan to dark)
- Green, brown or hazel eyes
- Between 151 to 200 cm in height.
- Generally heavier than most other elven sub-races
- Feral and distrustful of all others, including other elves
- Innate empathy with wild animals, but this is not an ability to speak with animals
- No dietary restrictions
